एक बार एक लकड़हारा था वो बहुत ही ईमानदार और मेहनती व्यक्ति था। लेकिन साथ ही वो बहुत गरीब भी था। उसके घर मे उसकी पत्नी और दो बच्चे भी थे।
वो रोज जंगल से लकड़ी काटकर लाता और उनको बेच कर अपने घर का पालन करता।लेकिन इतने कम कमाई में उसको घर चलाने में बहुत दिक्कत होती थी।कि बार तो उसके बच्चे और वो भूखे ही सो जाते थे।उससे अपने परिवार की ऐसी हालत देखी नही जाती थी।
जब भी वो बाहर जाता उसको अपने बच्चों के भूख से बिलखते चेहरे याद आते थे।एक दिन वो रोजाना की तरह लकड़ी काटने जंगल गया। वहाँ पर एक बूढ़ा व्यक्ति बहुत से बोझा लेकर जा रहा था।अचानक ही वो नीचे गिर गया और उसका सारा सामान बिखर गया।
उस लकड़हारे ने उसका सारा सामान इकठ्ठा कर उसके घर पहुंचा दिया।उस बूढ़े बाबा ने उस लकड़हारे को कहा कि तुम एक अच्छे इंसान हो इसलिए मैं तुमको एक डमरू देता हूं।
तुम जो भी मांगकर इसको बजा दोगे वो वस्तु तुमको प्राप्त हो जाएगी ।
लेकिन अगर तुम्हारे इलावा इसको किसी और ने बजाया तो उसका सब कुछ नष्ट हो जाएगा।
अब वो अपने घर गया। उसने सारी बात अपनी पत्नी को बताई।फिर उस लकड़हारे ने एक बोरी गेहूं माँगकर डमरू बजाया तो उसके सामने बहुत बड़ी बोरी गेहूं आ गया।
अब वो रोज कुछ न कुछ मांगता और उसको बेचकर अपना परिवार का पालन करने लगा अब वो बहुत अमीर हो गया।ये बात उनके पड़ोसियों को समझ नही आई कि कल तक भूखा सोने वाला आज इतना अमीर कैसे हो गया।
एक दिन वो पड़ोसी उसके खिड़की से उसको देख रहा था।लकड़हारे ने कुछ मांगा और डमरू बजाया उसकी इच्छा पूरी हो गयी।
ये देखकर पड़ोसी को समझ आया कि उसके अमीर होने का राज वो डमरू है।
उसने रात को उस डमरू को चुरा लिया और इच्छा मांगकर उस डमरू को बजाया।उसका सब कुछ खत्म हो गया।
उसने सारी बात लकड़हारे को बताई ।
लकड़हारे ने कहा कि मेरे अलावा जो भी कोई कुछ मांगकर इस डमरू को बजायेगा।उसका सब खत्म हो जाएगा।
फिर उस लकड़हारे ने उस पड़ोसी का सारा सामान वापिस मंगा दिया।
इस कहानी से हमे ये शिक्षा मिलती है कि हमको किसी दूसरे की वस्तु का इस्तेमाल करने से पहले उसको पूछना चाहिए नही तो उसका दुष्परिणाम उसको झेलना पड़ सकता है।

He stole the damro at night and played the damroo, asking for his wish. It was all over.

He told the whole thing to the woodcutter.

The woodcutter said that whoever asked for anything other than me would play this damru, it would all be over.

Then the woodcutter ordered all the belongings of the neighbor back.
